The choir’s busy Christmas programme commenced with a Chamber Choir from Barnt Green Choral singing the annual Memorial Service at Waseley Hills Crematorium on 9 December. This uplifting service was attended by many families bereaved in the last 12 months, some grieving and some giving thanks for the life of their deceased loved one. Many found great comfort and solace from the singing, and this event has now become a regular feature of Barnt Green Choral’s calendar.
The choir’s main Christmas Concert took place at St Andrew’s Church, Barnt Green, on Saturday 13 December, and was followed by a “mince pie party” in the Parish Hall. The church was packed, and a really fun, family atmosphere was created by conductor and compere extraordinaire, Steve Cowperthwaite. The choir sang Christmas songs in many different styles ranging from Paul McCartney to John Rutter, St Andrew’s School choir captured the hearts of everyone, and a 5-piece wind ensemble demonstrated that live instrument playing is unbeatable.
Steve Cowpertwaite commented “the choir excelled themselves and it was so good to have the St Andrews children involved”. One of the band commented that he really enjoyed playing for us and thought the choir were superb. The refreshments team, as usual, were great and their leader, Simon, is going to write a book “101 things you can do with a mince pie”.
The choir recommences rehearsals on the evening of Monday 5 January 2026 where it turns its attention to “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” by Karl Jenkins and “Song of the Universal” by Ola Gjeilo. These works will be performed at The Artrix Theatre, Bromsgrove on Saturday 28 March 2026. Tickets are now available from www.boxoffice@artrixbromsgrove.co.uk Book early to avoid disappointment.
